WATCH: Brazos The Rat – “Apocalypse Later”

Normally one would find Brian Yoder fronting Sarasota-based Fancy Rat, but as Brazos The Rat, the 28-year-old Yoder has found a solo-project where he can express ideas outside of the collective creative dynamic of a band.

“I’ve been writing and singing in Fancy Rat for about three years and the writing process became very collective, which is a wonderful thing,” he told SubAp!, “but i need an outlet in which i have total creative control.”

The project utilizes a three-track loop pedal, but Yoder does not store samples or pre-recorded loops in advance of the show.  Instead, everything is sonically assembled completely live, which Yoder admits can be tough and lead to a few mistakes.

“I feel that this approach is much more rewarding to the audience,” he said.  “You get a truly organic, and thus sometimes very imperfect, spectacle to behold.”

Watch him play the whistle-laden, ukulele-driven “Apocalypse Later” from within someone’s basement in Ohio below, and get more info on the project here.
