For those who are unfamiliar, the Ramblin’ Rose Upcycle is a budding business on Central Avenue in downtown Saint Petersburg. But it is many things – gallery, co-op, event space, and shop for connoisseurs of the vintage, vinyl, and peculiar. If you seek the new and now, the Upcycle offers that and beyond. Last Saturday was the riotous Rebirth Celebration for their new space on the 600, and synonymous with celebration are great sounds and better people.
St. Pete is something else – there is a sense of community in what’s going down and around on the 600 block and elsewhere. The Ramblin’ Rose Rebirth was one of those times that represent the best in the city – may it be the sight of friends and strangers flooding the sidewalk for a sit-down, guitar-based powwow after the show is over and the lights are out, or the surge of raucous vibes that are a natural byproduct when a mass of people gather in the same room to draw from a shared energy, and seek to prolong its life through expression, acceptance, and in the case of local electronic duo Young Egypt – gangsta rap.
Remember, Saint Petersburg, this community is something we all contribute to – as artists, thinkers, creators, and human beings – what we do with it is our own aggregate fate. Let’s enjoy the good times and cool music, but let us also make it a movement.
But enough existentialism – here are shots from the Ramblin’ Rose Rebirth!
