LOOK: FTHC Rocks NYC, Next FEST 11 w/ Larry & His Flask and Jenny Owen Youngs

Frank Turner teaches 1,400 people how to play air harmonica @ Webster Hall on September 30, 2012

So it’s finally October and the punk world is all a-Twitter about FEST with must see lists popping up all over the interwebs. Never fear, SubAp! is on board with helping you with your FEST planning. So much so, that we went up to New York to see Frank Turner finish up his biggest headlining U.S. tour (so far) with Larry & His Flask and Ms. Jenny Owen Youngs. The shows featured approx. 1,400 raucous fans singing-a-long at the top of their lungs on back-to-back nights at Webster Hall on September 29 and 30, 2012.

Bonus Update: Last Minutes & Lost Evenings – the ultimate intro to FTHC with some rarities thrown in for the fan who has everything – is now available on itunes here and in hard copy format DVD/CD from Epitaph here.

Frank Turner illuminated with some lovely lens flare

Frank Turner’s next stop, after recording his new record in Burbank, CA is FEST! The first official SubAp! FEST pick is seeing Frank Turner close out  FEST on Sunday, October 28th at 8Seconds from 11pm – 12am. Will there be a parking lot show ala Fest 9? Will Frank teach the crowd to play air harmonica? You’ll have to show up to find out!

As with every Frank Turner show there were throngs of fans from far flung locations including CA, DC, MD, NY, NJ, CT and FL, and that was just the people I talked to in the front row. I also got to hang out with one of the super cool Ruckus ladies, Tiffiny, and finally meet one of the Dear Frank Turner maestros, Valerie.

Now, meet The Sleeping Souls:

Tarrant Anderson plays bass in unique and innovative ways

Ben Lloyd is the guitarist extraordinaire for The Sleeping Souls

Matt Nasir pounds the keys and stealthily documents the shows whilst encouraging crowd participation

Nigel Powel is responsible for keeping the beat but occasionally surfs the crowd

As you would expect, Saturday’s penultimate show was just a smidge more reserved over the final Sunday show. The setlists for both shows detail a masterful mix of songs from the current record, England Keep My Bones, with tried and trued gems such as I Knew Prufrock Before He Was Famous and Substitute, and testing of new songs like One Fine Day (video below).

And, there’s more! Here’s a few videos so you can either reminisce or get ready for your next FTHC sing-a-long experience. First, take a look at Frank’s cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Thunder Road on September 29, 2012:

Now, check out a new song, One Fine Day, illustrating how Amelie led us all down a rosy path on September 30, 2012:

Finally, in perfect dénouement style, Frank finished out the final show in grand style with a frolic into the crowd while Larry & His Flask joined in on the merriment on stage with The Sleeping Souls. Well done, FTHC.

Larry & His Flask

And, there’s more good news… Larry & His Flask is ALSO playing FEST. This is awesome because Larry & His Flask were my fest find at Fest 9. They’ve come along way since playing early in the line-up at Rum Runners in 2010. See them headline The Atlantic on Sunday, October 28th from 10:00pm – 10:30pm then RUN over to see Frank Turner. It’s no small feat to get an audience of New Yorkers on their knees for you and Larry & His Flask achieved that task masterfully while making sure everyone had a big smile on their face.

Jenny Owen Youngs

Kicking off both nights with a fantastic tone while wishing the audience luck hooking up was Ms. Jenny Owen Youngs. She’s blessed with a lovely lilting voice that works perfectly with her own lovely songs whether performing solo like she did for these shows or with a band. Her new record, An Unwavering Band of Light, is streaming on bandcamp here. Listen to Your Apartment which has definitive ear worm qualities – “I’m so into you…” or celebrate being a pirate with Pirates.  I’m looking forward to hearing more from JOY and seeing her with a band sometime soon. Hopefully she’ll make a trek down to the Sunshine State soon – especially since she obviously likes pirates. We have those.
