LIVE REVIEW: Young The Giant at Ritz Ybor 03.17.12

On a night when green beer, shiny plastic beads, and leprechaun impersonators took over Seventh Avenue in Ybor City, Young The Giant presented something very real and essentially timeless to a sold out Ritz Ybor: a genuine, no-frills rock show.

The California-based outfit currently rule MTV and modern rock radio, but unlike much of the garbage that litters the mainstream American media market, Young The Giant are a unique hybrid of all the things right about music today.  Their 2010 eponymous LP is rife with perfectly crafted, radio-ready songs, and they possess an air of authenticity that gets translated into a glossy, polished live set.

That’s not to say that the band doesn’t have to work hard at what they do, they just do it really well.  So while 1503 E. 7th Ave worked itself into a steamy, hot mess over songs like “Cough Syrup,” “Strings,” and “12 Fingers,” frontman Sameer Gadhia stayed cool in a fluorescent yellow tank top as he swayed through set opener “I Got,” which found his ethereal vocals buoyed by his band’s pristine replication of the album track.

Their 11-song set pulled mostly from the aforementioned self-titled LP (“Guns Out,” “Apartment,” and especially “St. Walker” were highlights), but Gadhia & co. covered R. Kelly’s “Ignition” and even gave fans a taste of new material when they previewed a new song – “What You Get.”  Gadhia screamed his way through the intro of the four-minute cut and as it unfolded into a bouncy, yet sprawling pop gem, he alternated between mics (the echo effect on what looked like a Shure 55s was amazing) and keys all while tambourine shaking and pelvic thrusting the crowd into a frenzy.  Looking at the see of faces at The Ritz that evening, it was evident that they loved everything they got.

Have a look at some photos as well as a setlist below.  See video from the set below that.  A playlist featuring songs from the set can be had on Spotify.

The actual set list is posted at http://www.setlist.fm. The unknown song in slot #7 was the new song “I Wanna,” and the song in slot 13 was “Islands,” off the 2010 debut. Nice write-up though. While it was a good set, I still think Grouplove who opened was the real head-turner of the night.
