LISTEN: XXYYXX – XXYYXX

Aside from being the “CEO of the Illuminati” with plans to bring a “new world order” and some assassinations (read: saracasm), Marcel Everett — the now 17-year-old beatsmith/wunderkind better known as XXYYXX — seems like a pretty genuine guy.
SUB AP! CAL: HUNDRED WATERS + XXYYXX AT ORPHEUM 11.02.12
His live performances are mostly devoid of the glitz and glamour of other artists hellbent and okay with merely becoming internet famous, and he gives almost all of his recorded material away for free via Bandcamp or his Orlando, Fla.-based imprint Relief In Abstract Records. Hell, he was even kind enough to not make fun of us when we got our fan on at his April appearance at New World Brewery.
All of this happens as the rest of the world is fawning over his brand of sultry electronic soundscapes that seem to effortlessly synthesize the oft-perplexing world of beat construction, synth composition, vocal sampling, and pop craftsmanship. The best part is he’s only been at it for about two years.
“I’m trying to learn and get better,” he recently told Vice, addressing the fact that internet trolls are quick to criticize any mistake, “I made it ‘cos I want to make music. I’m still just learning, y’know?”
Well, he’s certainly ahead of the curve as evidenced in his latest self-titled full-length, which saw release in March. It’s an addicting listen and streaming below. The 13-track effort is also available as a pay-what-you-want download at the XXYYXX Bandcamp page. If you should decide to take it gratis, then make sure to be at Orpheum (after Rock The Park, of course) when XXYYXX opens for Hundred Waters. More information on the show is available at our calendar page.
