      XLR8R Best New artist 2012

Seattle producer Chris Roman is by no means a new face. Roman debuted in 2002, and has since built a substantial discography under the alias 214, releasing on labels like Harbour City Sorrow, Car Crash Set, and Fortified Audio. Originally from Miami, many of the artist’s tracks are accordingly laced with tinges of the city’s famed Bass sound, but his take on electro is very much his own. His signature has matured into a supple hybrid of dancefloor bounce and dystopian grit, a progression which culminated in his 2012 output, the finest of his career. As 214, Roman put his name to Fuzzy Leash for Yellow Machines, Plastic Spokes for Fortified Audio, and Submanouvers for Frustrated Funk, and all three of these EPs showed him incorporating a fresh dynamism. Plastic Spokes, for example, took in R&B and deep house elements, and he perfected these infusions on Overseas Highway, his first release as J. Alvarez, for Hypercolour’s LTD series. The EP’s pop appeal was a refreshing take on electro’s robotic rigidity, and declared Roman as not just an adept producer, but one capable of pushing the entire genre in new directions.

      American Idiot

Direct from Broadway, the smash-hit musical American Idiot tells the story of three lifelong friends, forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia. Based on Green Day’s Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum album and featuring the hits “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns, “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the blockbuster title track, American Idiot boldly takes the American musical where it’s never gone before. With direction by Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), choreography by Steven Hoggett (Black Watch) and orchestrations and arrangements by Tom Kitt (Next to Normal), the result is an experience Charles Isherwood of The New York Times declares “thrilling, emotionally charged, and as moving as any Broadway musical I’ve seen this year!”

American Idiot contains adult content and strong language.

      9:00 pm – 11:45 pm

Kikiilimikilii is the solo project of one founder of the Parisian art group and label Heia Sun, and bands Dorcelsius, BCBG, Feu Machin, Gross Bite …

Since 2010, he has performed all around the world and keeps a cryptic, abiographical résumé, citing ‘dgdghnfhnfnhf’ as a pretty big influence. He also has a physical debut on Heia Sun (EYES BEHIND, LAFIDKI) and on Amdiscs (PICTUREPLANE, CHROME WINGS, YOUNG ADULTS)

He has collaborated with Lafidki, Water Sark, Nathan Wheeler, Eizo Takashima, Christian Galarreta, Romano Krzych …
He has played alongside Mi Ami, Ensemble Economique, High Wolf, Protect U, Tearist, Arbouretum, Six Organs of Admittance …

kikiilimikilii’s music skates between echoic choral improvised terrains, mosquito-drone airspace, and cracked, lacustrine exotica.
He hushed blend of noisy psychedelia and trance leaning rhythm patterns for live noisy and trippy floors.

Steve Arvey started playing Music seriously when he was 18 years old. While in college in Gainesville Florida Steve met John Vilardo who was the first person that he ever jammed with. At that same period Steve had a new roommate by the name of Ben Andrews. Ben is a country blues ragtime guitarist from Washington, DC. Ben Introduced Steve to the great country bluesmen like Charley Patton, Robert Johnson, Bukka White, and Leadbelly. When Steve first heard Leadbelly his whole life changed. The words and music struck a deep emotion in Arvey’s soul. The blues became a deep part of Steve’s life. Ben Andrews really was my his big influence into the blues. He showed him how to fingerpick and got Steve into playing bass. Another person from Gainesville and an early influence was Barrelhouse Chuck. Chuck had a large record collection and was playing in the Robert Hunter Blues Band. Robert Hunter was a blind saxophone player who had worked with Bobby “Blue” Bland in the sixties. Eventually Chuck moved out to Seattle and Ben and Steve formed another band to back up Robert Hunter. The same year Bo Diddley moved to Gainesville from New Mexico and the Robert Hunter Band ended up backing Bo Diddley.

      9:00 pm – 12:45 am

      **TICKETS**

Ghostface Killah’s raps could be described as a vocal Blaxploitation film, complete with gangster tales, sexual encounters, humorous quotes and memorable lines. Adrian Younge scored Black Dynamite.

Ghostface Killah came into the game rapping over soul-sample-driven beats arranged by RZA. Adrian Younge makes retro soul that sounds like Bobby Digital himself would have sampled it.

Ghostface Killah loves the Delfonics. Adrian Younge is producing the new Delfonics album.

So yeah, the upcoming Tony Starks album, Twelve Reasons to Die (produced entirely by the aforementioned Mr. Younge and executive produced by RZA), seems to make a good bit of sense, and damn it all if the first single “The Rise of The Ghostface Killah” doesn’t exceed expectations.

      Ghostface Killah: http://www.islanddefjam.com/artist/home.aspx?artistID=7302

Ghostface Killah, is an American rapper and prominent member of the Wu-Tang Clan. After the group achieved breakthrough success in the aftermath of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), the members went on to pursue solo careers to varying levels of success. Ghostface Killah debuted his solo-career with Ironman in 1996, which was well received by music critics. He has continued his success over the following years with critically acclaimed albums such as Supreme Clientele (2000) and FishScale (2006). His stage name was taken from one of the characters in the 1979 kung fu film Mystery of Chessboxing. He is the founder of his own label Starks Enterprises.

Ghostface Killah is critically acclaimed for his loud, fast-paced flow, and his emotional stream-of-consciousness narratives containing cryptic slang and non-sequiturs. In 2006, MTV included him on their honorable mention list of The Greatest MCs of All Time, while the editors of About.com placed him on their list of the Top 50 MCs of Our Time (1987–2007), praising him as “one of the most imaginative storytellers of our time.” Ghostface’s storytelling abilities have widely been praised, with Q magazine calling him “rap’s finest storyteller.”

Adrian Younge presents Venice Dawn: http://www.waxpoetics.com/wax-poetics-artists/adrian-younge

Adrian Younge is the next generation of soul music. A self-taught musician and recording engineer who has dedicated his life to the study of classic soul music, Younge finds himself at the center of a new soul renaissance with a vision for pushing the boundaries of the music itself.

The story begins in 1998 as the budding hip-hop producer found himself confined by the limitations of the MPC. He began teaching himself how to play various instruments so he could fully realize his vision. First it was keyboards, then drums, sax, guitar, and bass. Fascinated with the sounds of Italian soundtracks by the likes of Ennio Morricone, Younge begins work on the soundtrack to the fictional film Venice Dawn, recording the album intermittently over the course of the next year. What developed was a sound equal parts Morricone and Air. Self-released in 2000, the moody, synth-drenched album was entirely composed, arranged, played, and recorded by Younge.

Eight years later in 2008, Younge would find himself at the center of the Black Dynamite zeitgeist. Instrumental in the film’s development, Younge not only edited the film, but also composed the original score, which was hailed as a modern blaxploitation masterpiece for authentically capturing the cinematic soul of the 1970s, from Isaac Hayes to Curtis Mayfield. Adrian Younge solidified himself as a force to be reckoned with and soon went to work writing music for the forthcoming Black Dynamite cartoon series on Adult Swim.

For his current solo project, Younge envisioned a new sound that would revisit his earlier, more baroque instrumental work of Venice Dawn and mesh it with the deep, gritty soul of Black Dynamite, eventually deciding to bring everything full circle by releasing the material under the moniker Venice Dawn. This new LP, titled Something About April, is a heavy, dark mix of psychedelic soul and cinematic instrumentals with hip-hop aesthetics, touching on influences from Morricone to King Crimson, Portishead to the Flamingos, Wu-Tang to Otis Redding.

Younge, who is signed with Wax Poetics Records, is currently writing and recording material for his next project, a Delfonics album with William Hart, founding singer of the legendary soul group.
