Ska returns to New World in the finest way possible as ThxMgmt welcomes Tampa legends, Magadog to the patio where their new album — Ybor City – will make it’s official Ybor City debut. The effort was easily one of the best local releases on 2011, and finds singer Ed Lowery leading his band through 13 cuts of fresh, up-rock ready skank.
Johnny Cakes and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalyso (who actually sometimes boast up to 13 members) tread down a similar path, but garnish their sound with fuzzy lead guitar, occasional steel drums, and frontman Michael Middlebrooks’ almost hip-hop vocal delivery.
Victims of Circumstance — the brainchild of Glenn Stewart and Michael Smyth — turn their guitars up extra loud and craft a punk/ska hybrid sound which recalls Less Than Jake on songs like “Riddled,” “Oh Paranoia,” and “The Final Flight of DB Cooper.”
Even more information on the show is available here, and a full stream of Magadog’s Ybor City can be had on Spotify.
